Iran commemorates late director Samuel Khachikian

Iran has commemorated the late Christian Iranian filmmaker Samuel Khachikian during programs held at Tehranթ§Չ‚-Չ„§s Museum of Contemporary Arts (TMCA).

The late director was paid tribute during week-long programs, sponsored by Moj-e No Pegah film institute, Tehranթ§Չ‚-Չ„§s Museum of Contemporary Arts (TMCA) and Hacopian Company.

A number of eminent Iranian cineastes and cinema lovers attended the programs that kicked off on October 26.

Several veteran Iranian directors and critics reviewed and discussed some selected films by Khachikian during the program scheduled on October 31.

Khachikian was an Iranian filmmaker, film editor, screenwriter and author. He was one of the most influential directors in Iran’s movie industry. Due to his techniques in suspense thriller films, he was nicknamed “Iran’s Hitchcock”.

Born 1923 in Tabriz to a family of Armenian immigrants, Samuel Khachikian made his film debut in 1953, titled The Return.

As an innovative filmmaker, he turned the production of murder mysteries into a popular new wave in the Iranian filmmaking.

A turning point in Khachikianթ§Չ‚-Չ„§s carrier came with his film A Storm in Our Town (1957), the chilly tale of a sinister-looking madman fleeing from an asylum and his subsequent encounters with an assortment of characters proved to be fertile ground for the director.

Khachikian met his death on October 22, 2001, in the Iranian capital city of Tehran.

Intersection of Events (1954), Storm in Our City (1957), Midnight Cry (1960), One Step Until Death (1960), Hit (1963), Stroke (1964), Farewell Tehran (1966), A Man in the Mirrorand Bluff (1993) are among Khachikianթ§Չ‚-Չ„§s remarkable works.
