Hrant Dink was the most prominent advocate of mutual respect between Turkey’s majority population and its\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0minorities. He was assassinated in\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a02007 outside the Istanbul offices of Agos, the Turkish-Armenian weekly newspaper that he edited.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The keynote speaker will be\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0Mr. Cem \u0569\u0083\u0549\u0080\u0093zdemir,\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0a German parliamentarian of Turkish descent.\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0He was the driving force behind the German parliament\u0569\u00a7\u0549\u0082-\u0549\u0084\u00a7s Armenian Genocide resolution on June 2nd<\/sup>, 2016. Mr. \u0569\u0083\u0549\u0080\u0093zdemir champions the cause of overcoming historical obstacles\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0to eliminate the \u0569\u00a7\u0549\u0082-\u056a\u0093us vs. them\u0569\u00a7\u0549\u0082-\u0539\u009d mentality.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

In an interview leading up to the\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0June 2nd decision, Cem \u0569\u0083\u0549\u0080\u0093zdemir was asked if this resolution was coming at the wrong time. His response was:\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0“Well it’s always at the wrong time. Since 101 years it’s the wrong time to talk about our responsibility and our guilt…So I think it’s time as friends of Turkey to tell Turkey, this is the wrong path.”<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\u0569\u0083\u0549\u0080\u0093zdemir’s decision to present the bill in 2016 was influenced by the work of German scholar, Wolfgang Gust.\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Zoryan Institute partnered with Gust\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0to collect, restore, translate\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0and publish thousands of\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0historical documents from the German Foreign Office Archive that\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0revealed the extent of the Ottoman policy\u0569\u0082\u0539\u00a0and planning of the 1915 Genocide.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/p>\n\n\n
