A family of six people – a two-year-old child among them – was shot dead on Monday morning in Gyumri. A six-month-old baby was hospitalized in critical condition, according to Interfax.<\/p>\n
A criminal case has been launched, and a serviceman from a Russian military base in Gyumri is suspected of the murders.<\/p>\n
At 6 a.m. on Monday it was discovered that an armed serviceman standing guard was absent, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a press release, adding that a search for the man, involving local law enforcement, was immediately launched. The crime, which led to several deaths, happened around midday.<\/p>\n
“In the house of the slain Avetisyan family, investigators found military boots, marked on the inside with the name Valery Permyakov, who serves at a Russian military base. The murder was committed with an AK-74<\/em>,” Sona Truzyan of Armenia’s investigative committee told Interfax.<\/p>\n Investigators believe the attack was most likely a crime of passion, RIA Novosti reported.<\/p>\n The Russian embassy in Armenia released a statement, expressing condolences, saying the two countries are working together on the case. The Russian side will provide any assistance needed to uncover the crime as soon as possible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told his Armenian counterpart, Eduard Nalbandyan.<\/p>\n A special commission headed by the first deputy of Russia’s Defense Minister has been sent to the crime scene, the ministry reported on Monday. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has expressed his deepest condolences to the victims’ families and friends.
