Թուրքական իշխանությունները ձեռնարկեցին նորոգելու Վանի հայկական Սուրբ Խաչ եկեղեցին` ցանկանալով այս կերպով աշխարհին ցույց տալ ազգային փոքրամասնությունների հոգեւոր մշակութային արժեքների նկատմամբ իրենց հանդուրժող կեցվածքն ու բարյացակամությունը, սակայն նրանք <<տեխնիկական խնդիրներ լինելու >> պատրվագով եկեղեցու գմբեթին մինչեւ օրս չեն տեղադրել եկեղեցիներին հատուկ անհրաժեշտ խաչը:
Եկեղեցու գմբեթի վրա խաչ չտեղադրելու հանգամանքը ամենեւին էլ տեխնիկական չի կարելի համարել, հաշվի առնելով թեկուզ միայն հենց այն փաստը, որ օրեր առաջ թուրքական ոստիկանության կողմից հայ երեխաներին արգելվեց եկեղեցում աղոթել: Իսկական հանդուրժողականություն եւ բարյացակամություն կարելի էր համարել այն եթե թուրքական իշխանությունը եկեղեցին թանգարանի վերածելու փոխարեն հանձներ իր իսկական տերերին` այսինքն հայ ժողովրդին:
Հանդուրժող լինելու իրենց կեցվածքն էլ ավելի ցայտուն ցույց տալու մտադրությամբ թուրքական իշխանությունները Կոստանդնուպոլսի Հայոց Պատրիարքարանին <<արտոնել է>> սակայն փաստացի ստիպել է սեպտեմբերի 19-ին Սուրբ Խաչ եկեղեցում կատարել սուրբ պատարագի արարողություն:
Թուրքական իշխանությունների այս գործելաոճը լայն բողոքի ալիք է բարձրացրել թե հայաստանում եւ թե Սփյուռքում` նկատի ունենալով նաեւ այն հանգամանքը, որ հայ եկեղեցու կանոնների համաձայն, եկեղեցին նորոգումից հետո պետք է վերաօծվի եւ ապա նոր իրականացվի հոգեւոր արարողություն: Թուրքական իշխանությունները փաստորեն ոչ արտոնում են վերաօծում եւ ոչ էլ գմբեթի վրա խաչի տեղադրում:
Այս հանգամանքն ստիպեց, որ Մայր Աթոռ Սուրբ Էջմիածնի ու Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիո կաթողիկոսությունները, Երուսաղեմի Հայոց Պատրիարքարանը, ինչպես նաեւ հայկական գրեթե բոլոր կառույցները հայտարարեն, որ բոյկոտելու են եւ չեն մասնակցելու Սուրբ Խաչ եկեղեցում սեպտեմբերի 19-ին թուրքական բեմադրությանը:
Եվրոպայի Հայերի Համագումարն ի լուր աշխարհի հայտարարում է, որ Սուրբ Խաչի բեմադրված արարողությանը չի մասնակցում Հայաստանի եւ Սփյուռքի հայությունը, իսկ Կոստանդնուպոլսում գործող հայկական կառույցների ներկայացուցիչների մասնակցությունը, ամենայն հավանականությամբ կատարվում է ստիպողականության եւ ճնշումների ներքո:

The Armenian people, both of the Republic of Armenia and of the Diaspora at large will not participate in the December 19th ecclesiastical ceremony at the St. Cross medieval Armenian Church on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van.
The Turkish authorities undertook the task of repairing Van’s St. Cross Armenian Church, thus wishing to demonstrate to the world community their tolerant concern and well intentions towards the spiritual and cultural values of the national minorities. Albeit, they failed to place a cross on the dome of the Armenian Church in question, disregarding the fact that the cross is the primary symbol and necessary icon of all Christian Churches. The reason for such a blunder is the Turkish authorities’ promulgated and latter-day excuse labelled as “technical problem issue”.
Yet it is blazingly obvious that the circumstance of the failure to place a cross cannot at all be regarded merely as a result of a “technical problem issue”. Suffice it to mention the recent alarming episode whereby Armenian youngsters were prohibited to pray in this same Church on Akhtamar Island.
Instead of misusing the St. Cross Armenian Church as a museum, as it is its official status now, it certainly would be a truly tolerant and good will act if the Turkish authorities will hand over the Armenian Church in question to its real and proper owners – the Armenian people.
Moreover, just to publicise their seemingly tolerant stance, the Turkish authorities declared they have “permitted” the Istanbul Armenian Patriarchy to perform the rituals of the Holy Mass in St Cross Church, thus covering up their factual policy of obliging the Patriarchy to perform the Holy Mass, on December 19th, in the Church in question.
The above-mentioned actions of the Turkish authorities have raised waves of protests both in Armenia and in the Diaspora, due to the rapture of a millennial ecclesiastical Canon of the Armenian Church, whereby a Holy Baptism of a renovated church precedes any performance of the Holy Mass in the church. The Turkish authorities have allowed neither the Holy Baptism nor the placement of the cross. Such prohibitary actions obliged the Catholicosate of the Holy See of Etchmiatzin, the Cilician Catholicosate, the Armenian Patriarchy of Jerusalem and nearly all the Armenian institutions to proclaim their boycott of and their refusal to participate in the September 19th Turkish State’s show
The Assembly of Armenians of Europe herewith declares to the whole world, that Armenia and the Diaspora are not taking part in the show staged at St Cross Armenian Church, and that the participation of the representatives of the various institutions of the Istanbul Armenians to the said staged-show is most probably the outcome of a pressurised obligation.
